Home & Recovering...

So I can't remember if I blogged about this but Jacob had a surgery 2 weeks ago to remove some kidney stones in his left kidney. This "kidney stone journey" begun way back in May of 2009. He awoke in severe pain, arrived at the emergency room, and find out he had kidney stones in both kidneys. The ER assurred us that he would pass his right kidney stones in 2-3 days(because these were the ones that were in the ureter and dropping, the left ones were still in the kidney. About a week later, still no sign of passing and lots of pain and missed work, we went to see a urologist. Understanding the circumstance, we, naturally, thought he'd zap his stones asap. Nope! he scheduled a surgery for 3 weeks later and Jacob ended up passing his stone 2 days before the surgery. As a result, he decided to continue with the surgery but remove the left kidney stones through a produre where they use shockwaves and vibrations on the back to "zap" the stones. Once that surgery was completed, we thought we were finally through with this month long "journey." But...

Fast forward 3 months later...August 21, 2009. Jacob wakes up with excruciating pain and immediately realizes that it's kidney stones yet again. We head to the ER and kidney stones are confirmed. But guess what, the surgery he had in May to remove the left stones did not work!! Well, we got a new urologist. He scheduled the surgery for the next day but this time it would be more invasive. He would go up the urinary tract and laser the stones and leave a nice long stint in his kidney. But, complications arose and the stone was lodged in the ureter so only half the stone was removed. On top of that, he had severe scar tissue and would need to leave the stint in for 2 painful weeks. After that, another surgery to try to removed the rest of the lodged stone.

That brings us to today. Jacob had his final surgery and it was a success!! The doctor was able to remove the stone completely. Also, it was such a success that he did not need to put another stint in his kidney this time. Yahoo!!!!! So Jacob is still in a lot of pain but it is manageable and we are so thankful it went so well.

Thanks for reading this long post all about kidney stones and Jacob's "journey".
